Marine Laser Cleaning

The Right Method for Marine Surface Work

Marine surface maintenance has always been a balance between getting the job done and managing the environmental impact. Traditional methods, grit blasting, abrasive disc grinding, chemical paint strippers, create serious problems in a working marine environment. Blast media contaminates dock water and settles as sediment. Chemical strippers require containment and disposal as hazardous waste under environmental regulations. Both methods take time and create significant remediation costs.

Laser cleaning produces no media, no chemical discharge and no contaminated runoff. Contaminants are vaporised and collected by an extraction system. The process is completely dry and generates no secondary waste stream, making it compliant with marine environmental regulations and far cleaner to operate in dock, quayside and vessel environments.

We serve commercial vessel operators, maritime heritage organisations, yacht and boat yards, dry dock facilities and harbour infrastructure operators across Yorkshire and the Humber region. Our mobile unit can be deployed dockside, in dry dock, in covered boatsheds and on-board larger vessels as required.

"PrepWorks removed three coats of antifouling from our steel barge hull in a single day. Clean bare steel right through, no media in the dock, no chemical smell. Better result than anything we've had from traditional yard contractors."

Applications

Marine Laser Cleaning Applications

We work on commercial vessels, heritage craft, dock infrastructure and maritime facilities throughout Yorkshire and the Humber.

Hull Antifouling Removal

Complete removal of antifouling paint, barrier coat and old coatings from hull plating. Laser cleaning removes multiple paint layers without grinding through the substrate. Bare steel or GRP revealed cleanly, ready for new antifouling application.

Marine Steelwork Treatment

Corrosion removal and surface preparation on deck fittings, hull welds, bulkhead structures, keel plates and structural steelwork. Sa 3 achievable without blasting media or chemical treatment.

Propeller Shaft & Stern Gear

Remove corrosion, barnacle adhesion residue and old coatings from propeller shafts, stern tubes and associated fittings. Precision cleaning around machined surfaces and seals.

Engine Room Components

Cleaning of marine diesel components, pipe work, heat exchangers and structural steelwork in engine compartments. Confined space access, no blast containment required, no chemical accumulation.

Dock & Harbour Infrastructure

Lock gate ironwork, quayside bollards, ladders, mooring cleats, fendering brackets and dock structures, ongoing corrosion treatment and maintenance without contaminating dock water.

Heritage & Classic Vessels

Conservation cleaning for historic vessel hulls, deck fittings, bronze and iron hardware. Laser cleaning is approved for use on heritage assets and works safely on mixed materials.

Bilge & Tank Interior Cleaning

Internal tank surfaces and bilge areas, remove contamination and prepare for inspection or recoating in confined spaces where blasting is impossible and chemicals create disposal problems.

Composite & GRP Surface Prep

Prepare GRP hull surfaces for osmotic blister repair, antifouling application or structural bonding. Laser cleaning removes old coatings without abrading or heating the composite substrate.

Why Laser Cleaning

Laser Cleaning vs. Alternatives

How laser cleaning compares to grit blasting and chemical stripping for marine applications.

Factor Laser Cleaning Grit Blasting Chemical Stripping
Media in Water / Dock None Significant contamination Not applicable
Chemical Discharge Risk None Not applicable High, containment required
Environmental Compliance Fully compliant Complex, consents required Complex, hazardous waste
Heritage Vessel Suitability Excellent Poor Poor
Confined Space Use Yes Restricted, containment Restricted, ventilation
Sa 3 Achievable Yes Yes No
Why PrepWorks

The Right Choice for Marine

Zero Surface Damage, Guaranteed
The laser targets only the contaminant. The substrate beneath, whatever the material, stays completely unaffected. No abrasion, no heat soak, no dimensional change.
No Media, No Chemicals, No Waste
Completely dry process. No blast media to dispose of, no chemical hazard to manage, no containment infrastructure. COSHH-free operation on your site.
Fully Mobile, We Come to Your Site
Our mobile unit comes to your depot, workshop, yard or construction site. You don't need to transport anything. We bring all equipment and operate independently.
Sa 3 ISO Grade, Maximum Cleanliness
We achieve Sa 3, the maximum cleanliness grade under ISO 8501, consistently and without abrasive media. Clean metal, ready for coating, welding, bonding or inspection.

FAQs

Marine Laser Cleaning, Questions Answered

We can work dockside, in dry dock or in covered boatsheds. Our mobile unit requires only a standard power supply and working clearance around the surface. We can work on vessels afloat for above-waterline work where safe access is possible.
Yes. The laser process is entirely dry and produces no liquid discharge, no chemical runoff and no blast media. The vaporised contaminant is collected by extraction and disposed of correctly. This makes it far cleaner than any alternative method near water.
Yes. Where legacy antifouling containing TBT or other restricted substances is being removed, the extraction system captures the vaporised material. Disposal of the collected waste is handled in accordance with current environmental regulations. This is a significant advantage over blasting which disperses the contaminant into the dock environment.
Yes. We cover Hull, Goole, Grimsby, Immingham and the wider Humber region as well as the East Yorkshire coast including Bridlington, Scarborough and Whitby. Contact us to confirm access arrangements for your specific location.
For larger vessels we can work from scaffold, access platforms, cherry pickers or on-board deck access as appropriate. We are experienced in working at height over water and will carry out a method statement and risk assessment for significant projects.
Yes. Laser cleaning is used on GRP hulls for antifouling removal and surface preparation. The parameters are adjusted carefully for composite substrates, the process removes coatings without heating or abrading the glass fibre layers beneath.
