Weld quality starts with surface cleanliness. Even small amounts of contamination in the weld zone, oil, grease, moisture, oxide or mill scale, can cause significant defects in the finished weld. Porosity is the most common result: hydrogen, hydrocarbons and nitrogen dissolve in the weld pool and evolve as bubbles during solidification, reducing strength, fatigue performance and pressure integrity.

Conventional pre-weld cleaning methods all have limitations. Wire brushing can introduce steel fibre. Grinding introduces grit. Solvents may not remove all surface oxides and must be fully evaporated before welding begins. Laser pre-weld cleaning removes all contamination in a single fast pass. The resulting surface is chemically active, oxide-free and free of any residual contaminant.
