Why Laser Coating Removal

Yorkshire's Leading Paint & Coating Removal Service

The condition of the substrate after coating removal determines how well a new coating adheres. Surfaces contaminated with solvent residue, grit or heat-affected metal will fail again quickly. Chemical strippers generate hazardous waste, heat guns risk distorting steel, and mechanical grinding is imprecise and creates abrasive debris.

Laser coating removal eliminates these risks. A precision laser beam ablates the paint or coating layer away from the substrate while leaving the metal, stone or masonry beneath completely unaffected. The result is a clean, residue-free surface ready for immediate recoating or inspection.

ThePrepWorks serves industrial, commercial, construction and heritage clients across Leeds, Sheffield, Bradford, York, Hull, Harrogate and the wider Yorkshire region. Our fully mobile unit brings all equipment to your site.

How Laser Coating Removal Works

Organic coatings absorb laser energy far more strongly than steel, stone or masonry beneath. The laser pulse heats the coating to ablation temperature in a fraction of a second, ejecting it from the surface while the substrate stays cool. Our operators adjust pulse energy, repetition rate and scan speed to match each coating and substrate combination. All ablated material is captured by our integrated extraction unit, making the process safe for occupied and sensitive environments.

What We Remove

Every Type of Coating Stripped Clean

Our laser system removes all common industrial, commercial and heritage coatings from steel, stone, concrete and masonry substrates.

Oil-Based & Gloss Paint

Complete removal of oil-based paints, gloss coatings and eggshell from steel and masonry. Ideal for industrial units, heritage buildings and commercial property across Yorkshire being refurbished and repainted.

Epoxy & High-Build Coatings

Laser removal of thick epoxy coatings, high-build industrial systems and failed paint from structural steel, bridges, tanks and vessels. Full removal to bare metal without abrasives or chemicals.

Powder Coatings

Efficient removal of powder coat from steel substrates for recoating, inspection or modification. Far cleaner than grinding, with no abrasive contamination to compromise adhesion of the new coating.

Bitumen & Tar Coatings

Laser removal of bituminous coatings and coal tar epoxy from steelwork and concrete, common in Yorkshire's water and utilities infrastructure. No solvents, no heat, ideal for confined spaces.

Anti-Fouling & Marine Coatings

Specialist removal of marine antifouling from vessel hulls and dock structures, eliminating the biocide-contaminated waste created by abrasive methods. Serving Hull and the Humber ports.

Heritage & Conservation Coatings

Removal of inappropriate coatings from listed buildings, war memorials and heritage stonework using laser methods recognised by Historic England. No abrasion, no chemicals, no risk to the substrate.

Method Comparison

Laser vs Chemical vs Mechanical Coating Removal

Three methods. One clear winner for precision, cleanliness and substrate safety.

No Chemical Waste
Chemical strippers generate solvent or caustic waste requiring neutralisation, containment and disposal. Laser produces only vaporised material captured by our extraction unit. No liquids, no solvents, no run-off. Ideal near drains, watercourses or food environments.
No Heat, No Distortion
Flame stripping distorts thin steel, stresses heat-treated components and creates fire risk. Laser delivers energy only to the coating. The substrate stays at ambient temperature, safe for thin-walled sections, precision components and adjacent materials.
Heritage Safe
Chemical and abrasive methods are prohibited on listed buildings. Laser coating removal is recognised by Historic England, making it the only safe option for heritage stone, brick and masonry where abrasion or chemical damage would be irreversible.
Optimum Recoating Surface
The laser-stripped surface is chemically active and free of abrasive residue. New coatings achieve excellent adhesion and outperform those applied to chemically or mechanically stripped surfaces.

Specialist Capability

Lead Paint Removal in Yorkshire

Lead paint is common in pre-1960s Yorkshire buildings, industrial premises and older steelwork. Removing it safely requires specialist procedures to protect operators, occupants and the environment.

Laser ablates the paint layer and the vaporised lead compounds are immediately captured by our HEPA-filtered extraction system. No grinding dust, no scrubbing waste, no contaminated water. Our operators follow all COSHH and Control of Lead at Work Regulations, and all captured material is disposed of as hazardous waste.

Selective Removal

Partial & Selective Coating Removal

Laser coating removal can strip only the area required while leaving adjacent coatings completely undisturbed. This is not possible with chemical or abrasive methods.

For weld repair, we remove coating from the weld zone only. For NDT inspection, we expose just the test point. For heritage work, we can remove a modern overpaint from a historic feature while leaving original finishes intact nearby. The laser beam is controllable to within a few millimetres, giving a level of precision no other method can match.

Our Process

How Our Coating Removal Service Works

1

Assessment & Quote

Send us photos of the coated surface and your goal, whether recoating, inspection or heritage restoration. We assess coating type and substrate and provide a written quote. No obligation.

2

Mobile Unit On-Site

Our fully equipped mobile laser unit arrives at your Yorkshire site with extraction, safety screening and all equipment. No infrastructure or preparation from you required.

3

Precise Laser Stripping

Our operator removes the coating layer by layer with parameters matched to your specific coating and substrate. All ablated material is captured by integrated extraction. No chemical run-off, no grit waste.

4

Clean Substrate Ready for Next Step

The stripped surface is inspected and signed off, immediately ready for primer application, welding, NDT inspection or the next conservation step.

FAQs

Coating Removal Questions Answered

Our laser removes oil-based and water-based paints, epoxy coatings, polyurethane coatings, powder coatings, bitumen, tar, anti-corrosion primers, antifouling coatings, rubber coatings and adhesive residue. We work on steel, stone, concrete and masonry across Yorkshire.
Yes. Laser stripping produces a clean, active metal surface with excellent adhesion for new primers and topcoats. The surface is free of chemical residue and abrasive contamination, both common causes of early coating failure.
Yes. Laser coating removal is recognised by Historic England for listed buildings and scheduled monuments. It removes inappropriate coatings from heritage stone, brick and masonry without abrasion or chemical treatment.
Yes. Our HEPA-filtered extraction captures all vaporised lead compounds. Our operators follow all COSHH and Control of Lead at Work Regulations requirements. Captured material is disposed of as hazardous waste in accordance with environmental regulations.
Laser is faster, cleaner and produces no chemical waste. Chemical strippers require dwell time, scrubbing, neutralisation and hazardous waste disposal. Laser produces only captured vapour and leaves a chemically active surface for superior new coating adhesion.
Yes. We can strip coating from a specific zone such as a weld area, an NDT test point or a heritage feature while leaving adjacent coating completely undisturbed. This level of precision is not achievable with chemical or abrasive methods.
Yes. We cover all of Yorkshire including Leeds, Sheffield, Bradford, York, Hull, Harrogate, Wakefield, Rotherham, Barnsley and Doncaster. We are fully mobile and bring all equipment to your site. Contact us for a free quote.
