Why Laser Coating Removal

Yorkshire's Leading Paint & Coating Removal Service

Removing old, degraded or failed coatings is one of the most critical and most demanding tasks in surface preparation. The condition of the underlying substrate after coating removal determines how well any new coating will adhere and how long it will last. A poorly stripped surface, contaminated with solvent residue, grit or heat-affected metal, is a surface that will fail again quickly.

Conventional coating removal methods each carry significant risks. Chemical strippers introduce aggressive solvents or caustic agents that can attack the substrate, contaminate the surface and generate hazardous waste that must be carefully managed. Heat guns and flame stripping can distort thin steel sections, affect heat-treated components and create fire risk. Mechanical methods grinding, needle guns, wire brushing are imprecise, create dust and abrasive waste, and can damage surface profiles and adjacent areas.

Laser coating removal eliminates these risks. A precision laser beam is directed at the coating surface. The paint or coating layer absorbs the laser energy and is instantly ablated vaporised or ejected from the substrate while the metal, stone or masonry beneath is unaffected. The result is a completely clean substrate surface, free of all coating residue, ready for immediate recoating or inspection.

PrepWorks deploys laser coating removal technology across Yorkshire, serving industrial, commercial, construction and heritage clients in Leeds, Sheffield, Bradford, York, Hull, Harrogate and the wider region. We are fully mobile our unit comes to your site with all equipment, and we can work in environments where chemical or abrasive methods are prohibited.

How Laser Coating Removal Works

The fundamental principle behind laser coating removal is the difference in optical absorption between the coating and the substrate beneath it. Most organic coatings paints, epoxies, polyurethanes absorb laser energy very strongly. The laser pulse delivers energy faster than the coating can conduct it away, causing the coating to heat to ablation temperature and be ejected from the surface in a fraction of a second.

The substrate steel, stone, concrete, masonry absorbs the laser energy much less strongly and does not reach a damaging temperature. The coating is gone. The substrate is intact. This selectivity is the key advantage of laser over every other coating removal method.

The laser parameters pulse energy, repetition rate, beam spot size, scan speed are adjusted to match the specific coating and substrate combination. A thick, hard epoxy on structural steel requires different settings to a thin heritage paint on sandstone. Our operators are trained to select the correct parameters for every job, ensuring complete coating removal without any risk to the substrate.

Ablated coating material is captured by our integrated extraction system a vacuum unit with filtered exhaust that captures all vapour and particulate, preventing environmental dispersal and protecting our operators. The system meets all relevant health and safety requirements for work in occupied or sensitive environments.

What We Remove

Every Type of Coating Stripped Clean

Our laser system removes all common industrial, commercial and heritage coatings from steel, stone, concrete and masonry substrates.

Oil-Based & Gloss Paint

Complete removal of oil-based paints, gloss coatings, eggshell and satinwood from steel and masonry. Ideal for industrial units, heritage buildings and commercial property across Yorkshire undergoing refurbishment and repainting.

Epoxy & High-Build Coatings

Laser removal of thick, hard epoxy coatings, high-build industrial coatings and failed paint systems from structural steel, bridges, tanks and vessels. We achieve full removal to bare metal without abrasive media or chemical agents.

Powder Coatings

Efficient removal of powder coat finishes from steel substrates for recoating, inspection or modification. Laser removal is far cleaner than grinding powder coat and does not introduce abrasive contamination that can cause adhesion failure on the new coating.

Bitumen & Tar Coatings

Laser removal of bituminous coatings, coal tar epoxy and tar-based treatments from steelwork and concrete widely used in Yorkshire's water and utilities infrastructure. Complete removal without solvents or heat, ideal for confined spaces and sensitive locations.

Anti-Fouling & Marine Coatings

Specialist removal of marine antifouling coatings from vessel hulls, dock structures and marine infrastructure. Laser removal eliminates the biocide-contaminated waste generated by mechanical and abrasive antifouling removal serving Hull and the Humber ports.

Heritage & Conservation Coatings

Removal of inappropriate coatings from heritage stonework, listed buildings, war memorials and historic structures using laser methods approved by Historic England. No abrasion, no chemicals, no risk to irreplaceable substrate.

Method Comparison

Laser vs Chemical vs Mechanical Coating Removal

Three methods. One clear winner for precision, cleanliness and substrate safety.

No Chemical Waste Zero Contamination
Chemical strippers generate solvent or caustic waste that must be neutralised, contained and disposed of an expensive, time-consuming process with significant environmental risk. Laser coating removal produces only small amounts of vaporised material that are captured by our extraction unit. No liquids, no solvents, no chemical waste. Ideal for work near drains, watercourses or in food-industry environments.
No Heat No Distortion or Stress
Flame stripping and heat guns deliver bulk heat to the substrate which can distort thin steel sections, stress heat-treated components, destroy gaskets and seals, and create fire risk. Laser coating removal delivers energy only to the coating layer. The substrate remains at ambient temperature. Safe for thin-walled steel, precision components and adjacent flammable materials.
Heritage Safe Approved for Listed Structures
Chemical and abrasive methods are prohibited on listed buildings and heritage structures. Laser coating removal is approved by Historic England and conservation authorities the only method that can remove inappropriate coatings from heritage stone, brick and masonry without any risk of abrasion or chemical damage to irreplaceable substrate.
Optimum Recoating Surface
The surface left by laser coating removal is chemically active, contaminant-free, and free of the abrasive residue that grinding and blasting introduce. New coatings applied to laser-stripped surfaces achieve excellent adhesion and consistently outperform those applied to chemically or mechanically stripped surfaces in long-term corrosion protection tests.

Specialist Capability

Lead Paint Removal in Yorkshire

Lead paint is found widely in older buildings and structures across Yorkshire in pre-1960s industrial premises, heritage buildings, Victorian housing, and on older steelwork and ironwork. The removal of lead paint requires specialist procedures to protect operators, occupants and the environment from lead dust and vapour.

Laser coating removal is one of the most controlled methods for lead paint removal available. The laser ablates the paint layer, and the vapourised lead compounds are immediately captured by our integrated extraction system with HEPA filtration. There is no grinding dust, no scrubbing waste, and no contaminated water all of which are significant problems with mechanical and chemical lead paint removal methods.

Our operators are trained and equipped for work with lead-containing coatings, following all relevant COSHH and Control of Lead at Work Regulations requirements. All captured material is disposed of as hazardous waste in accordance with environmental regulations.

If you have lead paint on steelwork, heritage ironwork or older buildings in Yorkshire that needs to be removed safely, contact PrepWorks for a site-specific assessment and quote.

Selective Removal

Partial & Selective Coating Removal

One of the most powerful capabilities of laser coating removal is the ability to strip coatings selectively removing only the area required while leaving adjacent coatings undisturbed. This is simply not possible with chemical or abrasive methods.

Selective coating removal is valuable in a number of applications. For weld repair, we can remove coating precisely from the weld zone only, leaving the surrounding coating intact. For NDT inspection, we expose only the test point area. For heritage conservation, we can remove a modern overpaint from a historic feature while leaving adjacent original finishes untouched.

The laser beam can be controlled to within a few millimetres, giving an unprecedented level of precision in coating removal that no other method can achieve. This makes it particularly valuable for complex or high-value structures where indiscriminate stripping would cause unnecessary damage or cost.
